The Marine Protected Area, set up in 2007, (Ministerial Decree of May 7, 2007) includes the area of the coastal cliffs of Punta del Maiolo, Punta Prodani and Punta delle Grotte, extending into the sea and the seabed surrounding the Island of Bergeggi, on land borders the Natural Reserve (Regional Law 10/85).
Its purpose is the environmental protection through various activities:
– measures to protect and enhance the natural heritage and environment;
– promotion of environmental education and popularization;
– creation of study programs, monitoring, and scientific research;
– promoting sustainable development of the area, with particular regards to the enhancement of traditional activities, local cultures and eco-tourism.
