This cave is the main karsts cavity in the Regional Nature Reserve of Bergeggi. Access to the cave is only allowed to the guided tours arranged by the Bergeggi Town Council, excursions can be organized upon request.
The exposed part of the cave consists in a wide main cavity called “Oxilia Central Cavern” where the sea partially enters today, and of some ramifications above the current sea level. The submerged part extends from the surface down to a depth of 7m and, despite a limited linear development compared to the exposed portion, its complexity is remarkable: narrow tunnels, smaller and larger chambers and small brackish lakes.
The cave is a karsts cavity which formed in the late Quaternary period in dolomite limestone dating back about 200 million years (Lower Tiers).
